Working alongside the wildlife to create our organic Chiltern Forage Farm, is generally to our mutual benefit.  Red kites tend to keep their distance while we build ‘dead hedges’ to shelter their prey.  Muntjac favour a dense area protected by a fallen Black Cherry.  Rabbits have yet to feed on the bare root hedging.

However grey squirrels, yet to be sighted, managed to devour the bark of both our specimen Hornbeam trees in search of the rising sap.  Drastic action was called for using the only protection which we happened to have at hand – a roll of mesh which we wound around the trunks as high as we could reach . . .
